30th AKWS Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition
Juror’s Statement
It was an honor and pleasure to be able to jury this years Alaska
Watercolor Society’s annual exhibition. It is always gratifying to see the
variety of expression in contemporary watermedia today. I wanted the exhibition
to reflect that diversity.
In judging a show I look for several things. Technical
proficiency is important, as well as a unique perspective on the subject matter,
but I also look for paintings that are conceptually potent and reflect the
individuality of the artist. Paintings that bring to mind the quote from
Emerson, “Insist on yourself; never imitate. Your own gift you can present every
moment with the cumulative force of a whole life's cultivation;” I was pleased
to see work that met this criteria.
I also want to thank all who entered the exhibition. The
willingness to place your work in front of the public and to share the fruits of
your personal exploration and artistic vision makes this show possible.
